Emotional Flashbacks

Updated: Sep 12, 2023

This is my current top choice for a beginner.

Pete Walker is a therapist who, like myself, used himself to understand and heal himself from an abusive childhood. The book is relatively easy to read and if you don't want to read the whole thing, Chapter 8, Managing Emotional Flashbacks" is very helpful to understanding "triggers".

Walker's language and naming of Emotional Flashbacks were so helpful to my own process. His website has a "13 Practical Steps to Managing an Emotional Flashback", definitely something I recommend to anyone who had an overwhelming childhood.

I reference Pete's work so if we are working with me and you just don't want to read another book, don't worry I do a lot of educating throughout my sessions so you understand yourself better, which gives you more control over the direction of your life.

Reading and learning about trauma will not change you but educating yourself will support you as you gain mastery over these flashbacks. Trauma work is in the body, however, I have found education is helpful to begin as you build awareness and resiliency.
